Office culture is something that is mentioned by lots of organisations, especially when they are hiring. Today, we explore what office culture means, how office cultures differ globally and we’ll give you some top tips to help you create a positive workplace culture

What is office culture? 

Office culture (or workplace culture) is defined by lots of different elements, and it is something that can be quite difficult to expressly define. Your office culture is something that will develop organically, however, it’s also something that you should be actively working on. 

Workplace culture is all about the environment you create for your teams, whether this is with office-based teams or remote teams. Your culture and how it affects your employees will play a big role in how happy your teams are. 

So, what’s a workplace culture made up of? It’s the combination of leadership, values, beliefs, traditions, behaviours and attitudes that form the emotional and relational environment of your workplace.

When we travel, we experience the richness of different cultures. However, if you travelled to different workplaces across the world, you’d also see suitable changes in workplace culture. Here are some of our favourite office culture examples from across the world:

 

Israel 

In countries such as Israel, the working week runs from Sunday to Thursday so that workers are free to observe Shabbat, the Jewish Holy Day. 

 

France

Workers in France are protected by a law called ‘Right to Disconnect’ which stipulates that most French employees don’t need to respond to emails out of office hours. This was a decision made solely for the well-being of the country’s workers. 

 

Japan

Whereas in Japan, companies invite employees to take part in Radio taiso, a 15-minute exercise regime. It’s credited with building morale, reducing stress and creating a feeling of unity among employees. 

 

Sweden

In Sweden, coffee breaks are taken very seriously. Employees are encouraged to relax and enjoy a beverage with their colleagues. Fika, as it is called, is said to incite conversation and improve camaraderie among teams.
